Infamous Anniversaries: 3 October 1952 – First British nuclear test

59 years ago, on 3 October 1952, the UK conducted its first nuclear test ‘Hurricane’ at the Montebello Islands in Western Australia. The 25-kiloton device was detonated inside the hull of the frigate HMS Plym in order to test the effects of a ship-smuggled bomb. Fallout from UK testing spread over large parts of the Australian mainland and had particularly severe effects on the indigenous population.
