CTBTO Executive Secretary Lassina Zerbo participated in the UN General Assembly informal session on 5 September 2013, to commemorate the International Day Against Nuclear Tests. The session was followed by a panel discussion where senior officials called the states to take efforts for banning nuclear testing.

“We need to observe 29 August as a time to act and not to wait. The desire to pursue a nuclear weapons free world is evident. The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty is the obvious indispensable instrument, which brings us closer to this goal. Nuclear testing is the final barrier to the development of nuclear weapons. Finally closing the door on nuclear testing is a critical step towards the elimination of nuclear weapons. Ending nuclear explosions is a goal on the road to nuclear disarmament that must be reached. Now is the time for the eight states whose ratification of the CTBT will bring it into force to show the political will and fully endorse it,”Zerbo stated.
