Today, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani will address the United Nations General Assembly about, among other things, his country’s nuclear program. As a member of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT), Iran has made an internationally legally-binding commitment not to build a nuclear weapon. Many allege that the Iranians are taking all the steps necessary to build a bomb as a hedge against attack or invasion by the United States, Israel, or other regional foes. It remains to be seen whether the election of the (relatively) moderate President Rouhani signals a beginning of the end to the Iranian nuclear crisis and the U.S.-Iranian diplomatic freeze writ large. WAND certainly supports a diplomatic solution at this juncture, but we also cannot help but think about the meeting’s timing in terms of another momentous nuclear nonproliferation event that could have made all the difference in the first place.
