Indonesia hosts Conference on Nuclear-Test-Ban

Indonesia hosted a two-day conference from 19 to 20 May 2014 on ways to promote the entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). The conference entitled ‘Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty – Regional Conference for States in Southeast Asia, the Pacific and Far East’ aimed at ‘pushing forward the enforcement of the CTBT regime in those regions and boosting capacity building for countries willing to take the benefits from CTBT technologies for science and peace purposes’.

During the keynote address the Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said that “…the main purpose of the conference is to encourage the Asia Pacific/Far East and the Pacific countries who are yet to ratify the CTBT for different reasons to do so. And this may be a technical issue, it may be more than that… This is part of Indonesia’s national efforts in disarmament.”

The CTBTO Executive Secretary Lassina Zerbo emphasized “…the leadership that Indonesia has shown by bringing the ratification of the CTBT to conclusion and his excellency Foreign Minister Natelagawa has led the process himself and has been well involved. And now Indonesia is co-chairing with Hungary the Article 14 Conference of the Treaty which is a conference that is meant to promote the ratification and the early entry into force of the CTBT. In the region, Indonesia is showing that great leadership and we want that leadership to be spread around so that the 8 remaining ratifications go in sooner rather than later for the early entry into force of the treaty that is long due, which has been on for the past nearly 20 years.”

Several members of the Group of Eminent Persons (GEM) were among the speakers during the conference  and eighteen countries from the wider region participated.
