UN Radio: Le système de surveillance du TICEN maillon fort de la gestion des catastrophes

Against the backdrop of the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Reduction, in Sendai, Japan, UN radio publishes an interview (recorded last year) with Patrick Grenard, Special Assistant to the Executive Secretary. The feature highlights the use of CTBTO monitoring data for tsunami early warning and the detection of radioactive emissions from nuclear accidents.

[Working translation from French] “While UN experts gathered at the Third United Nations World Conference on Disaster Reduction, which takes place in Sendai, Japan and highlighted the importance of early warning systems in reducing disaster risks, we put the spotlight on the International Monitoring System of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO)…The 2004 tsunami led the international community to realize that the data from seismic and hydroacoustic stations of the CTBT’s International Monitoring System could be very useful for the detection and management of crisis involving tsunamis.”
