Invitation to a press briefing with former heads of defence of the United States and United Kingdom on the fringes of the CTBTO Science and Technology Conference – organised by Atomic Reporters

William Perry, Director of the Preventive Defense Project at the Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC), Stanford University, and 19th United States Secretary of Defense.

Lord Desmond Browne, Vice Chairman, Nuclear Threat Initiative, and former United Kingdom Secretary of State for Defence.

Ambassador Alexander Kmentt, Director for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation, Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs.

Topics will include the CTBTO’s scientific contribution to nuclear non-proliferation and verification, consequences from the failure of the NPT Review Conference, and current NATO-Russia tensions.

Note: Perry and Browne are both in Vienna to attend the CTBTO Science and Technology Conference 2015, 22-26 June 2015 at the Hofburg in Vienna.

Biographical information about the speakers

William Perry

William Perry is the Michael and Barbara Berberian Professor (emeritus) at Stanford University. He is a Senior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute and the Hoover Institution, and serves as Director of the Preventive Defense Project. William Perry was the 19th Secretary of Defense for the United States, serving from February 1994 to January 1997. He previously served as Deputy Secretary of Defense (1993-1994) and as Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (1977-1981).

Lord Desmond Browne

Lord Browne of Ladyton (Des Browne) is a British Labour Party politician who was the Member of Parliament for Kilmarnock and Loudoun from 1997 to 2010. In 2006, he was appointed Secretary of State for Defence and, from 2007 to 2008, he combined this role with the role of Secretary of State for Scotland. From October 2009 until March 2014, he was Convenor of the Top Level Group of Parliamentarians for Multi-Lateral Nuclear Disarmament and Non-proliferation. Since 2014, Lord Browne has served as the Nuclear Threat Initiative’s Vice Chairman.

Ambassador Alexander Kmentt

Ambassador Alexander Kmentt is an Austrian diplomat with a specialisation on non-proliferation and disarmament issues. He has previously served as a Special Assistant to the Executive Secretary of Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO). Previous disarmament responsibilities in the Austrian Foreign Ministry include Deputy Permanent Representative of Austria to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva and Deputy Director for Disarmament Affairs. During the Austrian European Union (EU) Presidency in 2006, he chaired the EU Working Group on Non-Proliferation.
