Looking ahead

On 24 to 25 August, the CTBT’s Group of Eminent Persons will meet Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and Executive Secretary Zerbo to discuss ways to advance the entry into force of the Treaty. Separate information on media opportunities will follow.

The 1996 CTBT bans all nuclear explosions including underground. To date, 183 countries have signed the CTBT, of which 164 have formally endorsed the Treaty by ratifying it. However, eight States have yet to ratify for entry into force: China, Egypt, India, Iran, Israel, North Korea, Pakistan and the United States. The CTBTO has established a verification regime capable of detecting nuclear explosions anywhere on the planet. It detected the North Korean nuclear tests in 2006, 2009 and 2013 swiftly and precisely.
