2016 ACUNS Vienna Annual Conference on peace and security


From January 13 – 15, 2016, the annual Conference of the Academic Council on the United Nations System – ACUNS, Vienna Liaison Office, will take place at the Vienna International Centre (VIC), the United Nations Office at Vienna (VIC), Wagramer Strasse. 5, 1220 Vienna. Up to 350 participants from all over the world are expected to come and more than 40 speakers from the United Nations, diplomats, and academics will meet to discuss „Peace and Security“ and “New Approaches towards a Peaceful and more Sustainable World”.

ACUNS serves as bridge between academia and practice connecting the United Nations, the more experienced with the young generation keen to gather knowledge and to learn about the international system. During the three days, the work of Vienna based international organizations dealing with issues of Peace and Security will be discussed and solutions to emerging challenges of the 21st century will be presented, such as how a sustainable industrial development can be approached, transparency and confidence building measures be strengthened, dealing with the danger of terrorism, to guarantee human rights, particularly the rights of women and children, and others. All these crucial and important topics are to be discussed interactively.

The opening session will feature some of the most prominent speakers including the CTBTO executive secretary Lassina Zerbo, who will deliver the opening remarks, Yuri Fedotov representing UNOV as Director General and UNODC as Executive Director, and ACUNS Executive Director Alistair Edgar. The conference is aiming to answer questions, how the UN system and the international community can overcome emerging challenges and ensure a peaceful and more sustainable world.

The conference will be hosted by the CTBTO and is sponsored by the City of Vienna.

As a recognition of the importance of young people, the conference will feature a special session of the Regional Academy on the United Nations (RAUN), an academic program that trains young scholars in the UN and international system.

Many representatives of the diplomatic corps, ambassadors, researchers and experts from around the world will come to Vienna to contribute their expertise on the topic of Peace and Security.
