Action Needed to Ratify the 1996 Nuclear Test Ban Treaty

Portrait Dr Lassina Zerbo CTBTO 2015InDepthNews published a slightly modified text of the address CTBTO Executive Secretary Lassina Zerbo delivered to the High-level Segment of the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva on 26 February. In his remarks, Zerbo talked about the positive steps being taken to advance the work of the Conference and how the CTBT can serve as a tool for dialogue between North and South Korea in light of the positive boost the Winter Olympics seems to have given the relationship between the two countries: “A unilaterally declared test moratorium moving towards eventual signature of the CTBT would be a start.”

Zerbo also touched upon the 2020 NPT Review Conference and commented that trust and confidence are key elements necessary to achieve a successful outcome. On making progress on the CTBT, Zerbo said: “Through trust and respect, multilateralism and dialogue can assert itself as the most effective means of resolving issues in disarmament and non-proliferation.”
