U.S. Undermining the Global Nuclear Testing Taboo

Responding to the 2018 Nuclear Posture Review, InDepthNews has published an article that extensively addresses the relationship between the U.S. and the CTBT, the organization’s history and its significance. The article highlights that the International Monitoring System (IMS) plays crucial role in measuring and monitoring of nuclear tests and relays Executive Secretary Lassina Zerbo’s remarks made at the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva where Zerbo Zerbo quoted former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry who referred to the International Monitoring System as “one of the greatest accomplishments of the modern world” . The article further mentions the United States’ongoing strong support to the IMS and the CTBTO, including pledging two major voluntary contributions in 2011 that were going towards supporting the development of the IMS and reconstructing a hydroacoustic station in the French Southern Territories and “thereby completing the hydroacoustic network”.

The article also touches upon Zerbo’s views on the 2020 NPT Review and the situation in the Korean Peninsula and can be read in its entirety here.
