This earthquake expert dodged Russian surveillance to try to halt nuclear testing

Seismologist Lynn Sykes was one of the scientists negotiating the Threshold Test Ban Treaty (TTBT) in 1974 and on the occasion of his recently published book “Silencing the Bomb: One Scientist’s Quest to Halt Nuclear Testing”, he is interviewed by The Verge on topics such as detecting underground nuclear tests, the process leading up to the CTBT, and the dangers of nuclear war. Although Sykes laments that they were unable to establish a comprehensive test ban treaty at the time of the TTBT, he still considers it “a big accomplishment” that no-one except North Korea has tested nuclear bombs since 1998.

The interview can be read in its entirety here.
