In a newscast on SRF Swiss Radio and Television, the SRF highlighted the recent dismantlement of the Punggye-ri nuclear test site, and included an interview with Executive Secretary of the CTBTO Lassina Zerbo, who underlined the importance of including experts, not just journalists in the process stating, “We need to send experts to do ground work in the field and check what is happening on the ground.” When asked what the explosion means for the North Korean nuclear program, Zerbo explained that nothing has changed aside from physically closing the nuclear test site.

Another expert featured in the program, Oliver Thranert, head of think tank at the Center for Security Studies in Zurich, voices the concern regarding DPRK’s nuclear capabilities. Thranert notes that it is well known that North Korea has nuclear weapons and that they have rockets that can carry nuclear weapons over long distances, but explains that the international community does not know whether these two elements can fit and work accurately together.
