CTBT’s Purpose

The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) puts a cap on the development of nuclear weapons.

A country with nuclear ambitions will be constrained in its ability to develop nuclear weapons; countries with nuclear arsenals will be constrained in improving them.

The five nuclear weapon States have all adopted unilateral moratoria on nuclear testing, the last tests occurring in 1996. India and Pakistan followed suit after their concurrent tests in 1998. The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea tested nuclear devices in 2006, 2009, 2013, twice in 2016 (January and September) and 2017
